School of Medicine (SOM)

The School of Medicine offers:

  • 6-year program taught in English, however, Turkish language proficiency should be achieved by the 4th year to work with patients
  • MD degree
  • Koç University School of Medicine is included in the approved schools’ lists of ECFMG (for USA Clinical Master applications), California Medical Board and GMC (for UK Clinical Master applications) and students are supported to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
  • Pre-clinical and clinical courses are taught by 163 faculty members who are leaders in their clinical and research fields
  • The program accepts 40 students per year from the Turkish national university entrance exam and up to 20 international students throught the international admissions procedure.
  • The Koç University Hospital is located in central Istanbul and has: 400 in patient rooms, 14 operating rooms, interventional and imaging facilities, 77 intensive care units, and separate emergency services for adults and children. There is also a radiotherapy center with particular focus on oncology, cancer, genetics and infectious diseases.
  • An Advanced Learning Centre is available for students to rehearse “standard patient” practice by means of computer simulation
  • Students are encouraged to participate in research in various laboratories and clinics of the University including the Koç University Research Center for Translational Medicine (KUTTAM)

Curriculum:

  • 1st year – courses and seminars related to medicine as well as the core education program of the University are conducted in the main campus (Rumelifeneri)
  • 2nd and 3rd year – basic medical courses, preliminary clinical medicine courses and basic-clinical bridge topics are conducted in the main campus (Rumelifeneri)
  • 4th and 5th year – diagnosis and treatment of diseases through the internship training program are conducted in the Koç University Hospital campus
  • 6th year – as pre-graduate interns, students undertake care of patients in the Koç University Hospital campus

School of Nursing (SON)

The Koç University School of Nursing was founded in 1999 as a result of the cooperation with John Hopkins University School of Nursing which is one of the best five schools in the world.

The School of Nursing offers:

  • A 4-year program leading to a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Nursing taught in English
  • 18 full-time faculty members who are renowned experts in their field of study.
  • First and only in Turkey School of Nursing to be accredited by ACEN (Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing)
  • An active, comfortable, and enjoyable education at Koç University Hospital which includes prospective technological equipment, modern service intellection, audio/visual equipped classrooms, conference rooms, simulation laboratories, computer laboratories, cafeteria, and resting areas. The Health Sciences Library provides the most qualified, contemporary, and rich hard copy and digital sources in Turkey about nursing.
  • Graduates have the opportunity to work in professional environments in foreign countries as well as in Turkey and they can also continue their graduate studies (Masters, Doctorate) in leading universities in Turkey or abroad.

Curriculum

  • Evidence-based teaching focused on health promotion, disease prevention, community development, and high-quality acute care competencies.
  • Courses are taught in English but proficiency in Turkish at C level is required from the 2nd year of the program onwards.

Research

  • State-of-the-art science laboratories, a computer laboratory, a Nursing Skills laboratory, and a well-equipped health sciences library with unlimited internet access and electronic library resources.
